CASE MANAGEMENT INTERNSHIP
The Organization:
Project Access San Diego is the San Diego County Medical Society Foundation’s flagship program. The heart of the program are physicians and other healthcare providers who volunteer their services to provide low income individuals who do not have insurance with specialty medical care. Project Access’ network of volunteers provide the full range of healthcare at no charge to low-income and uninsured residents of San Diego County. Project Access is modeled after other successful programs being implemented in 50 cities around the country.

The Position:
A case manager intern will assist Project Access case managers with the process of screening, enrolling, and follow-up of patients referred to Project Access for specialty care. Patients are initially enrolled in the program for six months and then returned to their medical home for regular care.
In addition to the regular case management work, intern will assist with Project Access San Diego Surgery Day; an event that mobilizes a network of medical volunteers, hospitals, surgery centers to provide about 40 uninsured patients with donated surgeries and procedures that significantly improve their health, ability work, and quality of life. These events take place on a Saturday a couple times a year.

It is also a fine learning and resume building experience for any undergraduate or graduate student who desires to learn about healthcare issues affecting the uninsured in our nation, and wants to understand the different ways people may access medical care.
The intern will have the benefit of meeting and interacting with local health care leaders in San Diego County.
Key Responsibilities:
Intern duties Include:
• Follow up of patients and reminder calls for appointments or surgeries
• Assist with filing system for case management
• Update case work database as requested
• Perform patient satisfaction survey at 3 and 6 months of enrollment
• Translation of patients “thank you cards” to volunteer physicians
• Medical language interpretation (optional)
Qualifications:
• Fluent in English and Spanish
• Excellent customer service and communication skills
• Highly responsible and professional with a strong attention to detail
• Experience and comfort with the handling of confidential information
• Strong computer skills including data entry
The intern may be an undergraduate or graduate student. The internship may be done for academic credit, graduate program thesis, career exploration, or service learning.
Hours per week:
Preferred hours are 8 to 10 hours per week for 4 to 6 months, but we can accommodate more if the college requires it. The internship may be done one, two, or three days per week, depending on the student's class schedule.
