Study Skills in Organic Chemistry: 9 Golden Rules for Success

What I do is more teaching than tutoring. I am the only seasoned academic Ph.D. in San Diego who utilizes perceptual psychology to tutor both undergraduate and graduate level Organic Chemistry. I firmly believe in reducing the material to the student's level for total comprehension.

SD County Colleges I cover:
  • Cal State San Marcos
  • Mira Costa
  • Palomar
  • Mesa
  • Miramar
  • UCSD
  • SDSU
  • USD
  • Grossmont
  • Cuyamaca

My style is simple. It is my belief that the diligent student has the knowledge in his/her head to solve problems, however requires a guided approach (Socratic Method) to draw forth the information. My key responsibilities are (1) show the student how to approach organic chemistry as a "language"; (2) to teach the student problem solving skills; and (3) to get the student to the point of becoming independent. I keep things flexible, adaptive, personal when necessary, and prefer to offer real-life applications of the material taught so students can understand the importance of learning the subject.

The best time to hire a tutor is when you begin to need one. Please don't wait until the semester is half completed before doing so. I have a 100% success rate in coaching my students into A/B grades when they follow my suggestions and adhere to their S.M.A.R.T. goals, and can make this happen for you!

Did you know that San Diego agencies on average charge over $55 per hour with an average minimum purchase of SIXTEEN hours? Did you know many times they employ people who have taken only four (4) courses in chemistry? Four courses!!! My competitive rate is as little as $37.50 per hour (no package), $35 per hour (10 h package) or $32.50 per hour (20 h package)! An ORGANIC CHEMISTRY PH.D./Postdoctoral teacher/tutor for as little as $32.50 per hour!

I prefer not to go over three hours for a given session unless it is absolutely necessary. The number of sessions per week is determined by your needs. At your request, I will also design "mock tests" or practice exams for you. These are good not only for review, however very effective in overcoming test anxiety.

I am "on call" for you during the day of your exam - no extra charge.

Remember, a Professional Tutor is your personal competitive edge! Excel today!

Student Testimonial

In Fall 2010, I had a particularly challenging Organic Synthesis class, and I hired Joseph as an organic tutor for the semester. He did such a great job I recommended him to my friends, and two of those students also became regular clients. Joseph has great skills for explaining these complex reaction systems, mechanisms, requirements for the reactions, the physical dynamics involved in why a reaction works one way as opposed to another. He has a great amount of patience when teaching the subject matter. Joseph was also able to bring real world experience to the paper drawings that illustrate organic chemistry reactions by explaining one could use this reaction in the process to make a drug, as an example.

Joseph was always well prepared for each of our sessions. He would bring research papers he had found online about certain reactions. Joseph also had reaction synthesis diagrams already prepared for the problem set we would be working that day. I was always so pleased he had taken time out of his day to look at things we would be working on within our 2 hour time frame. To me, that went above and beyond the call of duty as a tutor.

As a student I found that Joseph was a great tutor and very influential on my final grade in Organic Chemistry. The course proved to be very difficult for me and meeting with Joseph before my exams really helped me understand the information better. Not only did Joseph take the time to meet with me, but he made himself available for any questions and drove all the way to my location to meet. Another asset that Joseph provided was informational flowcharts and diagrams that were helpful in understanding the information. Overall, I would recommend Joseph as a tutor and I felt very comfortable working with him.

Joseph is an outstanding tutor, and I would recommend him to anyone. Not only does he adapt his teaching style to each students unique needs, but he also makes you feel extremely comfortable; I was able to admit I was completely lost at times without being embarrassed. He worked with me through every detail of first semester organic chemistry, and while the class was averaging 39% on exams I was receiving grades of 87%. You can tell he sincerely cares if his students succeed, and even puts himself "on-call" before exams for any last minute questions. If you are a willing to put in the effort, he will go above and beyond to work with you to receive the grade you desire. With his help I was able to achieve an A in a subject that results with half the class failing each semester.
